• Franconian Wine Country

Franconia is a wine-growing region in the northwest part of Bavaria, Germany. Franconia has a wine-making tradition that dates back at least 1200 years.
The Main river cuts a weaving path through the best wine-producing villages with south-facing vineyards lining its banks. The tributaries to the Main are also influential and help mitigate the cold winter temperatures .
There are just about 6,100 hectares of vines planted in Franconia and around 80 percent of these are whites grape varieties. The people of this region are passionate about their wine.
  • Home of Silvaner Grapes

Franconian wine benefits from a diverse range of soils, including red sandstone, shell limestone, and Keuper. These soils, formed during the Triassic period, contribute to the unique mineral character and flavor of the region's wines, particularly the Silvaner.
Silvaner lays claim as Franconia's leading grape variety. Franconia is the spiritual home of Silvaner.
Besides Silvaner, Riesling, Mueller-Thurgau and Bacchus are also grown in this region. In recent years wine-growers also started to cultivate Chardonnay and Pinot Gris which make excellent wines.
  • Bocksbeutel

More than 40 percent of all Franken wines are bottled in the distinctive, ellipsoidal and elegant bottles, called Bocksbeutel.
Only Franken and limited regions in Europe are allowed to use the Bocksbeutel. Its shape is protected by European Union.
The Bocksbeutel has been used for at least 250 years. Some says the name comes from "Bauchige Buddel" (bulky bottle), "Booksbüdel" (a bag for prayer books), or the scrotum of a goat (Bocksbeutel).

Some of the best Franconian artisan wines are stored in wooden barrels to provide a distinctive and unique flavor. 200 years old oak wood trees from the nearby Spessart forest are used to make the barrels.
